Monstera barrieri is a hemiepiphytic vine that can grow up to 10 meters in height, often climbing trees in its native habitat of French Guiana and parts of Central and South America . The plant has an asymmetrical stem up to 2 cm in diameter, with internodes shorter than they are broad. Its petioles range from 18–41 cm in length, supporting blades that are 36–58 cm long and 31–37 cm wide . The leaves are evergreen, deep green, and waxy, with fenestrations (holes and splits) that develop as the plant matures, allowing light to reach lower leaves and helping withstand wind and rain.
